8 months have past (yikes!) since I assembled this big brother. The last few weeks, I finally "set mind to bloody purpose" and finished painting it! I definitely like how the conversion of the scythes came out. This baby is going to see a lot more field time in some time to come!

Hi all,

My brother and me just started Firestorm Armada as a side game (next to our usual WarmaHordes stuff) and we bought a Terran and Sorylian starter last week. Earlier this week I finished my first Terran Alliance Cruiser test model and I'm pretty satisfied with it; I want to start gaming with a fully painted fleet asap!

Tonight I finished 3 Terran Alliance Frigates, so making good progress so far.

Coming Saturday, our girls are going to be at a local Christmas Fair all day to sell their handmade necklaces and bracelets, so we are grabbing this opportunity to play our first test game and exchange some turret fire and torpedoes :D

Saturday night the biatch of Circle and Everblight met each other on the battlefield to settle some dispute about who was the better looking girl in Immoren... *bla* *bla*

After playing eThaggy a lot the last few months, it was time for me to look at the new star of the Legion: Vayl! Reading the big forums gave me lots of ideas for a nice 35pts list. I already tried out the list this week against my brother playing eHoarlock, but this weekend I was going to play another battle against my wargaming buddy Vincent with his eKaya list. This was going to be a tough battle, because Vincent knows his eKaya inside out!

The lists:

Vayl, Typhon, Scythean, Seraph, Shredder, Striders + UA and a Shepherd.

eKaya & Laris, WW Stalker, Pureblood WW, Gorax, Argus, Druids + UA and a Wayfarer.

We played the SR2010 Capture The Flag scenario:

FIGHT!

Round 1:

Circle runs forward, warping all over the place. eKaya advances, puts stealth up and Forced Evo on the Pureblood. Druids don't want to be bullseyes for Striders and stay in the back with clouds, elemental protection and counter spells.

Legion advances cautiously. Vayl casts leash on Typhon and tenacity on both herself and the Seraph. Typhon forces for excessive healing. Striders go wide and try to flank the Circle force.

Round 2:

Circle is not going to fall for the flanking trick and he notices that I put my Striders just a bit to close... Laris runs forward and eKaya spirit shifts into combat with the Striders, puts stealth up and uses her feat. The Gorax en Argus teleport into combat with the Striders. The Pureblood advances and sprays Vayl, but is out of range and teleports in combat too.

Hmmm, I did not anticipated this and now the bloody forest was in my way too. The four Striders not in combat, take CRA's in pairs at the druids, killing 2. Vayl moves forward, slipstreams the Seraph with her, puts up tenacity on herself and the Seraph, and pops her feat. Typhon leashes forward and stays behind with excessive healing. The Seraph slipstreams the Scythean forward and tries to shoot stuff, but is out of range. Scythean charges the Pureblood, but is 1" out of range! ARGH. Ok, during the feat I move stuff back and put the free Striders in the way to disrupt charge lanes.

Round 3:

His turn the Druids shoot my Striders, but his dice fail him horribly. eKaya, Gorax, Argus and the Stalker kill off all but 4 Striders and eKaya put primal on the Pureblood. The Pureblood warps for strength and tramples another Strider, putting him within combat of the Scythean. He buys extra attacks, but not even a Scythean can withstand a combination of warped strength, primal and forced evo.

So, this is my chance! The 2 Striders in the forest miss their CRA on the Druid Leader. The other Strider walks out of combat with eKaya and dies to a free strike (according to plan). Vayl puts up incite, slipstreams the Seraph and walks forward through the bloody bushes. The Typhon leashes forward. Seraph slipstreams Vayl up and starts shooting DEF 16 eKaya. I roll the dice and get 4 strafe shots! Measuring the distance, eKaya is just 1" out of incite range (I hate forests), bah. First boosted shot, miss. Second boosted shot, miss... Third boosted shot, MISS! Fourth shot misses too of course. Bah.

Ok, Typhon, you are my only hope. My dice are on fire; eKaya transfers the first spray and the remaining 2 sprays just do enough damage to kill her!

So, who's the biggest bitch? Vayl is!

Aftermath:

This battle did not go exactly as I planned and I should have put my Striders closer to the main force or further away from the opponent first turn. Also, the forest in the middle was really hindering my movement and I should have anticipated that from the start. I didn't make a lot use out of Vayl's spells too and with the Druids in the back, I should have put something within stealth range of his beasts and made use of e.g. rampager to pull his stuff forward.

Anywyz, lots learned from this battle and I really start like Vayl, A LOT.

What lurks in the shadows... Part 2

I finished assembling the monster and it turned out quiet nice. Because the scythes are pretty long I had to raise the base and tilt the position a bit on the base. As you can see on the pictures, the right scythe is just as few millimeters above the ground; good enough for me!

So, now starts the more time consuming part, greenstuffing and painting :-D I will probably first finish my second Angelius and my 2 harriers that are half way done, before continuing on this guy. Anywyz, he's battle field ready!

As the GenCon 2010 storm continues above, I'm secretly working in the shadows below on my newest killing machine... The first time I set my eyes on pictures of the Scythean model, I knew before hand that those scythes had to go. I ordered a set of small and large GW tyranid scythes from ebay and this week I received my much anticipated Scythean *rooaarr*.

Yesterday I started with replacing the scythes with the plastic GW ones and decided the pair of smaller scythes fit best on the model without making it look disproportionate.

Blood Mark: Offensive Upkeep spell that debuffs arm. (Target enemy model) Rasheth may choose to transfer damage to that model after which the spell ends.

Heavy Metal Dayz 7 - Oberhausen, Germany

Last weekend I went to the Heavy Metal Dayz 7 in Oberhausen (Germany) together with a gaming buddy (KhadorRob). It was a 2-day team tournament with 5 rounds of gaming total; the point format was 42 and you needed to bring 2 lists (both lists needed to be played at least twice). We didn't do too well, because we weren't very familiar with the special format the Germans used and ended at place 21 of the 29 teams attending the event. On top of that, there were a lot of good players attending.

I won 3 games with eThaggy and lost 2 with Saeryn; eAsphyxious is Borken! hehe ;-) Though, in comparison eThaggy is an absolute beast if you go beast heavy on him, awesome stuff. My buddy won 3 games too (2 with Vlad and 1 with Butcher).

Heavy Metal Dayz 7 - Slideshow

Lots of nice armies, the atmosphere was really relaxed and there was no shortage on beer and alcohol either; these guys sure know how to drink!

What was very curious is that no one played Skorne and only 1 played Circle. We saw A LOT of Menoth and Khador. I guess that will all change when the printed Hordes stuff finally comes out.

Legionnaires of Everblight

Finished the first six! I used them in the 35pts SR2010 tournament this weekend and they played their part perfectly. Cheap unit which is great for distraction and holding the enemy up in the front. Because of my inexperience with Absylonia and some bad match-ups (I didn't take a second list *bonk*) I won only 2 of my 4 games with minimal control points. Need more practice!!

It has been some time now that I actually finished painting a whole model, thus the lack of updates on my blog. Forgetting your camera while playing games doesn't help either and I don't really like to post stuff without at least some pictures...

News from the Front:
My group is finally fully back into WarmaHordes with the release of the final Hordes PDF's and everyone is really excited to try his stuff out again (without having to relearn the models some weeks after). Next saturday, all five of us are going to a 35pt tournament in a city nearby with at least 20 players attending. We have time for 1 or 2 more practice games this week and then we are good to go!
Not sure yet, but after the purchase of my second Angelius, I'm thinking of taking an Absylonia list or a Saeryn list.

Hobby Corner:
After the purchase of our brand new dinner table, "we" decided it was time for me to move my hobby stuff out of the living room and into the study. A good opportunity to clean my desk and make room for a nice hobby corner!

As you can see, still busy with my Legion army and I promise to post some pictures real soon of stuff I actually finished!

The Fell Caller and the Grand Exemplar meet on the battlefield!

Now for the first battle report of the year! In about 6 weeks my brother and me are going to a local 35pts Steamroller tournament, so we decided it was time to oil the gears and get ready to rumble. We printed out the new steamroller scenario's (which I like a lot) and picked one at random; fate decided Kill Box.

With the coming of MK2, time for a new start and new casters. We wanted to start out easy, so we both made a 25 point list, him taking Grissel and me taking Epic Kreoss. After setting up the table, we rolled the dice and my brother deployed first and started the game.

Deployment

Trollbloods: Grissel, Axer, Full Champions, Min Long Riders, Min Krielstone bearers + Elder, Fell Caller.

Protectorate of Menoth: eKreoss, Avatar, Redeemer, Full TFG + UA, Min Choir, Vassal, Covenant.

Turn 1

The Troll horde runs forward!

Menoth reacts by moving up the battlefield in orderly fashion and eKreoss gives Inviolable Resolve to the Avatar and Sacrosanct on the TFG. Redeemer shots some rockets to check range and does minor damage.

Turn 2

Grissel makes a tactical change and orders the Long Riders to run to the other flank. The Champions line-up in spear formation to prepare for the incoming charge.

eKreoss upkeeps both spells and gives the Redeemer some focus. Covenant no KD, Vassal with Enliven on the Avatar and Choir singing Battle Hymm. The TFG charge the Champion spearhead and do some damage, setting the trollkin on fire. Iron Zeal goes up for added protection. The Redeemer manages to shoot away most of the Krielstone unit with deviations and direct hits, leaving the Bearer standing alone. The Avatar tries to add insult to injury, but is just out of charge range (and forgetting to put up Menoth Gaze before the charge *doh*).

Turn 3

Grissel wants revenge for her fallen warriors and pops her feat! She starts off with casting Calamity on the TFG unit and shooting their leader in the face. The Champions make short work of the TFG in the front line, but feel the effects of Sacrosanct short after and fall to their knees before the Glory That Is Menoth, Awe Inspired by the.... ok, I'll stop now :) Anywyz, the Axer charges the Avatar and fails to penetrate his armor. The Long Riders run to the flank of my army. After that, everything gets to move some more and the 2 forces are fully engaged now (afterwards, we discussed that it would perhaps have been better to keep the Long Riders back for a charge next turn, instead of running them into melee with my stuff, not having used my feat yet).

eKreoss rubs his hands and feels his time for glory is near and calls for Strength of Arms! With the help of the Redeemer he destroys all three Long Riders and the Fell Caller. The Avatar and remaining TFG start to hack away at the Champions and the Covenant reads the no spells passage.

Turn 4

Grissel refuses to give up and tries to shoot eKreoss to death, but his armor protects him from the worst of the damage. eKreoss returns her the favor and ends the battle swiftly.

Well, I like my army! If I must believe the forums nowadays, eKreoss is the worst caster Menoth has. What a load of crap. His 2 upkeep spells are very nice, make the Avatar ARM 23 and punishing the enemy for killing stuff with Sacrosanct. In combination with the Covenant, he has ways to deal with arc nodes, KD and Stationary. On top of that, a nice amount of focus and a killer feat when used at the right time.

Already have ideas for expanding the list to 35 points; I'll switch the Redeemer for a Vanquisher, adding an extra Vassal and unit of Daughters for more flexibility and speed. Enough anti-infantry options and and ways to deal with heavy armor.

First post of the year! I picked-up my brushes again after some time of doing no painting at all and as usual, threw around my whole painting schedule of what to paint and which army *bah*. With the release of MK2 I decided to go the Menoth route again and to start with the model that will probably see a lot of play time this year, my Avatar.

Already started painting the gold on him last year, but quit half way being burned-out with painting gold. So tackling the gold was the first thing on my list. Now that is out of the way, I can finish the model, highlighting the gold, the black armor plates and start with the rest of the details.

What to do when you don't want to play Hordes or Warmachine ALL the time? Well, pull out the teams and start making some bloody mess and punch some faces... time for BLOODBOWL!

A few of my gaming group ordered some new teams to paint-up and in the meantime my brother and me made a brand new play board. I finished the board itself today and continuing with the decorative bits like advertisement boards.

I already played my first match this week and the rules came back to me very quickly. Can't wait for the next one!

Internal Affairs - Results!

Last Tuesday was the conclusion of the Internal Affairs painting contest! Too bad only 4 of the 7 entries were finished, but nevertheless is was a fun experience for my gaming group. After doing a secret voting round for the best model, we had our Internal Affairs contest winner:

Unanimously picked as the best model of the four and well deserved!! Grats on the win Eric-Jan. As for the other 3 models, here they are:

The Testament of Menoth was painted by myself and Void Seer Mordikaar by Kilvati. Well, I hope you like them and maybe my gaming group will do this contest again sometime in the future (hopefully with more finished models then!).

DIY: MK2 cards

After seeing Haydn's post on KIWITHRALLS about making MK2 cards, I wanted to show how I am doing mine.

What do you need? A laminating machine, some laminating pouches, scissors and the printed-out PDF with MK2 cards (I printed mine 2 pages a sheet).

Cut the pages to the size you want to have your cards. Put the card into the pouch and start laminating!

Cut the laminated card to even smaller size if you want and voilà!

If you have a whiteboard maker, you can keep notes on the empty spaces or even track damage.

These cards will perfectly suit my gaming needs until PPS releases the brand new ones in January.

Internal Affairs - We settle our differences in style!

Back in the early days we used to be a single minded gaming group, only playing GW related games like Warhammer and 40k. Sometime after the release of 40k 4th edition, the unthinkable happened... I came across the news that a new game called Hordes was about to be released and from that moment on things would never be the same.

In the present my gaming group consist of 5 die-hard PPS addicts (including me), 2 buddies still hooked to the GW games and 1 who's somewhere in the middle. We meet every Tuesday evening in the house of one of my buddies and 95% of the games being played are WM/Hordes while the other 2 are usually painting GW stuff.

Because gaming wise we are pretty much split up, I came up with the idea to do something together again with the whole group; a mini painting competition! I asked everyone to pick a model (small to medium base) and paint it up in a single month. The competition will close the first week of December after which we will all have three votes to spent on our favorite models, but:

you cannot vote on your own model
you have a vote of 3 points, a vote of 2 points and one vote of 1 point

The one that has the most votes will win a nice (consumable) price (still have to decide what). Of course the point of the competition is not to win the price, but to have fun with the whole group again and do something together.

The competition starts this week and here are the first unpainted/undercoated entries:

There is 1 entry missing, but I hope to post it next week. In the first week of December I will reveal the finished entries, but before I announce the winner of the Internal Affairs painting competition I would like to know what my blog readers think of the entries. So keep an eye out for the Internal Affairs poll in December!

And the Master of the Benelux is...

...Fokke van der Molen! This excellent player and very friendly guy may only be addressed as Master of the Benelux for at least a whole year! Gratz with the win!

This weekend Masters of the Benelux was a real blast and the most awesome tournament I ever played in. After 4 rounds of 500 on Saturday, 3 rounds of 750 on Sunday and 56 people attending, this tournament was the biggest in this region (and from hearsay in Europe!) ever!

You can find me on a shared 18th place with my Menoth army; not too shabby. My first day went really bad with only a single win in the first round, but I made up for it and won all 3 matches on Sunday! My buddy Kilvati ended up with the Best Painted Army award with his Skorne (grats again!).

Luck favors the Bold!

Masters is only 2 weeks away, so last Tuesday I had another go with Reznik against my arch enemy Borka, in the hands of my all too capable Borka-Throwing brother. I have decided not to change my Reznik list and stay with the TFG instead of the Idrians. Because of numerous distractions atm I won't be able to finish my Idrians and with Gorman finished, my current list is fully painted!

Don't have a full battlereport this time, only some quick shots with my brother's iphone (I forgot my camera *doh*!). Anywyz, turn 2 I started to process his Trollbloods into my Menoth meatgrinder, shooting infused redeemer rockets at his champions and charging marched tfg into his other champions and longriders. Reznik seemed assured of his victory since he didn't have much left standing after that round.

Then the impossible happened... well, not so impossible it seems... He made a nice charge lane toward Reznik by clearing away some tfg with his last longriders and champions (I should have put my gorman smoke on the other side!!!). The keg carrier fills Borka up with his mighty liquor, the Mauler gets reading for Borka-Throw; Borka deviates EXACTLY on the right spot with a nice charge lane to Reznik. I don't have to tell you what happened then of course. Grats to my brother for pulling that one off AGAIN! lol.

I also got a chance to paint some stuff up. Because the Hordes fieldtest is not so long away anymore, I pulled out my legion models and finished painting my Seraph and another Shredder. From a close distance the drybrushed skin doesn't look very fantastic, but I'm aiming for tabletop quality with my Legion and on the table it does look great!

Today I also finished my 2 Deathstalkers but they are still glossy and atm it's too cold outside to spray them with a layer of dullcote. Pictures later this week if the weather permits.

Finally sick and tired of the subpar quality of photo's I put on my blog, I went shopping at the Ikea for 2 decent lights: TERTIAL (thanx for the tip Malebolgia). Only 9 euro a piece and the 100 watt lamps were 4 euro a piece. Here's a picture of my new setup (including my new gradient blue background):

So, all nice and cozy, but was it worth the money? Hell yeah. I painted up Gorman for my Masters list after I finished my first 3 Idrians. He's only missing static grass atm, but that's because I'm waiting on my order of 2 cans of Testors Dullcote (after my fiasco with the GW Purity Seal crap). Here he is!

I am VERY satisfied with the quality of the photo (and the paintjob of course). This is the quality I was hoping for!

Now to finish the rest of my Idrians :-D

Reznik vs eMorghoul

Last Tuesday I tried out a 750 Reznik list against an eMorghoul list of Kilvati in preparation for Masters.

The lists we used:

The first turns I killed some Bloodrunners with a few lucky rocket shots. The remaining Bloodrunners and solo started eating away at my TFG in return and holding them up in the forest with his Ferox trying to flank me.

Molik Karn got an early charge on my BoV and utterly destroyed him before he could move back with enliven from the Vassal. In return Aiyana Harmed Molik, killing him with the help of Vilmon and some well placed rockets. The Zealots went to town on the Swordsmen and left 1 standing.

After that I forgot to make more pictures :(

Anywyz, his Ferox closed in on my right flank and I tried to counter the threat with my remaining jacks and Brand of Heresy, but only managed to kill 2. I tried to do some damage on Morghoul with my Zealots, but to no avail. Because I knew he was going to pop his feat next turn, I used Aiyana to counter it, but I moved her to far away from protection and Reznik. She got killed by Morghoul himself and he popped his feat. The Ferox were close enough to advance and leap behind Reznik and we all know how that ended.

Well earned victory to Kilvati!

I'm going to make some adjustments to my army: The Reckoner is too much of a point sink and too slow. By trading it for a Devout, I can drop Gorman and add a Reclaimer to support my Jacks with focus. Also I need more flexibility and speed in the list, so the TFG are going for Idrians. This is what I came up with for my next practice battle:

Reznik, Hierophant, BoV, Redeemer, Devout, Reclaimer, Anastasia, Vilmon, Rupert, Vassal, full Choir, full Zealots + MB, full Idrians + UA, A&H

Sweet, sweet Vengeance

Yeah, I missed out on my much anticipated tournament yesterday. Monday I got hit with a nasty fever which took me the rest of the week to recover from. Big bummer...

I got some painting done later this week and finished my Blessing of Vengeance which is nice, because now I have my 500 points list fully painted for the upcoming Masters. Not the greatest paint job ever, but its done.

I did have some problems sealing it; because Testors Dullcoat is still not available at my local hobbyshop, I bought a can of GW Purity Seal. I gave the model a coat of varnish outside but I didn't realize the temperature difference was so big, so I got some frosting on my model *growl*. I cleaned up the frosting where appropriate by painting it over and sprayed the model again inside in my apartment hall which went a lot better. So, a word of advise, don't buy GW Purity Seal :-D

Coming week, I'm going to try out a 750 list with Sevvy expanding on my 500 points list to see if it works before I'm going to try out stuff like the Testament.

Gearing up for the last 4 months

Only 4 months till the end of the year and more importantly, till the end of MK1 and the beginning of the new MK2 era! How I'm looking forward to MK2... I'm really hyped and very anxious about it (like the rest of WM gaming community all around the globe I guess). It's almost half year ago that we got to see the play test rules of MK2 for the first time; how time flies!!

So, what does my planning look like for these last couple of months? There are a few events on my agenda I want participate in.

One of them is the SR 500pts tournament during the summer Ducosim (the Dutch quarterly game convention) which is only one and a half week away. Busy atm finishing the last 3 models to get my tweaked Severius army fully painted and ready, and doing a final test game next week against Kilvati’s Morghoul army.
A week after that one, I am going to my LGS to attend to another SR 500pts tournament with the same Severius list to get some more practice games in for...

...Benelux Masters 2009 which is only 8 weeks away. A 2 days tournament with 4 rounds of 500pts the first day and 3 rounds of 750pts the next day, to decide the who is the supreme general of the Benelux region! I was planning on taking my legion lists for Masters, but after my last tournament I have the feeling Hordes just isn’t my style and the holy fire of The Creator still burns hot in my heart.
For the 500pts rounds I’m taking my tweaked Severius list, because I like playing him the best at that point level (Severius, Hierophant, BoV, Vilmon, Rupert, Vassal, Wrack, 10 TFG +UA, 10 Zealots +MB, A&H).
750pts though is going to be a totally different ball game… I can count the number of 750pts games I have ever played on 1 hand (shame on me)! So that's like 6 weeks to practice against my buddies and get some games under my belt.

And what about the list? I've read some great stuff on the forums about the Testament and since he will still be great in MK2, I ordered him last week. I came up with the following list for him: Testament, Hierophant, Gravus, Vilmon, 3 Wracks, 5 Bastions, 4 Vengers, 10 Zealots +MB, 10 Idrians +UA, A&H, Anastasia, Rupert.
The list looks very solid to me, so I don’t think I am going to make a lot of changes to it before I take it to Masters. Problem is I will have to work my ass off to get it all painted, because I still have black Vengers, Bastions and Idrians looking at me on my working desk. I probably won't make it, but it will be a nice start (since I want to have all that stuff painted before MK2 anyway).

My plans are set and the "only" thing to do is practice and paint (and blogging my progress of course)! I am going to play MK1 till the end and have fun before we start the next year with a Big Bang!

Back from the 2 weeks vacation in Spain! Because pictures say more then words, I have a nice one which sums up how it was :D

I didn't want to post anything before I had something to show for, so I finished my Gobbers and made some pictures. These buggers took me longer than expected, but I really enjoyed painting them; Greenskins are just fun!

Last week I went to a local 500pts tournament at the gameshop nearby with my brother and gaming buddy. I took my Legion list (posted earlier) to see how it performs in competitive games and ended up with 2 wins (against Mordikar & Vayl) and 1 loss (against Ashlynn). The list works pretty ok, but still have some problems working around masses of infantry. And after playing a tournament with Legion I'm not so sure if I really like playing a Hordes army as much as I thought.

So here I am, contemplating if I should not just take my Holy Champions of Menoth to the upcoming Masters event... There are still 2 practice tournaments coming up before Masters, so still some time to try out other stuff and make up my mind. To be continued!!

Btw, one more picture from my vacation I just have to share; do you know when you need to start getting worried? When you see a Spanish nun in a weapons shop!

Angelius and Benelux Masters preparation

When I am in the middle of painting infantry, the strangest thing always happens... I start looking for other stuff to paint. My Knights Exemplar have been on my desk for like more than a month now, and they are still not finished yet! So I painted up my Angelius, which was way more fun to paint anyway :-D

To make matters even worse (or more interesting) I'm even considering taking my Saeryn list to the Masters tournament which is still more than 3 months away. Enough time to practice with the list and paint everything up and try the list out in at least 2 local tournaments before Masters. Lucky for me, Maelstromgames has a 17% discount atm on all their models (voucher code is: SUMMER-MADNESS), so I ordered Typhon, another Raptor and a second Deathstalker for my 750 points upgrade.

If I'm going to take Legion to the Masters tournament, that means I'm putting all my Protectorate stuff on a hold for a while till I finish my 500 and 750 Legion lists.

Subcultures Showdown tournament report

Last sunday my brother, my gaming buddy and me attended the Subcultures Showdown, a local SR4 tournament, to show off our gaming and painting skills again. With 10 players entering we had a nice turn out! The location where we played was pretty packed with tables and players because of a Warhammer Fantasy tournament being held at the same time.

The competition was rough with mostly veteran players attending, including the national champion and the highest ranked national player from last year.

I brought the following list:

Castigator
Revenger
Hierophant
Vassal
Full Choir
Full Zealots + MB
Vilmonster
Rhupert
A&H

Not the most optimal list choice but it was fully painted and I wanted to try for the best painted army.

The scenario for the first round was Mosh Pit and I played against the Talion Charter with Shae, Mariner, Buccaneer, Nomad, Seadogs, Mr. Walls and The Commodore.

With my warjacks under protection of Safe Passage and my Zealots holding up the front, I was able to win the game with most victory points in the Mosh Pit when the time ran out. Nice, first win!

The second scenario was caster kill. My next opponent played Legion with Thagrosh, Carnivean, Angelius, Warchief, Forsaken and 5 Raptors.

After trading some shots, him getting his Angelius very close to Severius and doing minor damage, he left Thagrosh in the open with no way to transfer damage (Carvnivean already died and the Angelius was full). Some well placed Zealot bombs won me the second game!

At that point only me and my brother won both our games, but luckly for us we didn't have to play each other :-D

The last scenario was to capture 2 points, one in each deployment zone, 8" from the table edge. My opponent (the highest ranked national player from last year) brought a very nasty Mercenary list with Ashlynn, Nomad, Gudrun, Eiryss, Rhupert, Stannis, Herne and Jonne, Steelhead Halberdiers and Steelhead Heavy Cavalry.

In the second turn he was able to throw everything into melee with my army to my great suprise! The combination of speed tricks (Ashlynns Quicken, Stannis Brocker, March from Ruphert and reach) took me totally off guard... With Ashes to Ashes and some Zealots bombs I was able to get Ashlynn down to 4 hitpoints, but after seeing no more possibilty to finish her off, he overwhelmed my army and sealed the fate of Severius.

My brother was victorious however and that won him the tournament!! Grats to you bro and well deserved :-D He got to pick a scenery piece from the Warmachine Gale Force Nine range, and took the Protectorate temple :-D We are going to have some nice games at home around that piece of scenery.

I ended fourth place, but I did win the Best Painted Army price and received a 10 euro store credit voucher; mission accomplished!

A very exciting and fun Sunday indeed. On to the next one!

Mister and Misses Borken

Mister Borken himself was finished some time ago, but the Queen of All Borkenness was still standing in a dark corner crying for a paintjob. And so I granted her wish and now these 2 are fully ready to use in the upcoming SR4 tournament next weekend!

Yesterday I tried out the brand new Bastions against my circle buddy from my playing group. He used the following list:

We rolled, he wins and deploys first:

Turn 1:

He semi runs/advances forward and forgets to move Baldur (I missed that he forgot that actually).

I give Blessing of Vengeance (BoS from now on) a focus and run him towards the Wolves in the forest. The Zealots advance under Prayer of Warding (no spells) and March from Rhupert. A&H go Invisible, Vilmon runs Impervious toward the tower on the left and the rest advance toward the wall. Severius casts Eye of Menoth and arcs Ashes to Ashes through BoS on the Wolves, but they are just out of range.

Turn 2:

Warpwolf warps for armour and runs toward the Zealots. The Druids cast Devouring on the Warpwolf hurting him a lot *evil grin* and take out the front row of Zealots in the AoE. The Wolves use their mini feat and charge BoV and the Zealots, taking BoV out of the game (!) and another Zealot. Baldur creates a forest, walks up and takes a leak against a nearby tree :-) Gorax and Argus follow and the War Wolf runs behind the forest in my flank.

Hmm, I just lost BoV to my own stupid mistake. I upkeep EoM and the Zealots go to town on the Wolves (losing 1 to a free-strike for the greater good) and pop Greater Destiny. A&H charge the Warpwolf, Aiyana casting Harm and Holt ultimately fails doing any major damage on the Warpwolf! The dice punish me for using borken models, arghhh... Bastions take up position behind the wall and get Heroic Call for El Rhupert. Vilmon and Senny run behind the line and Sevvy immolates the Harmed Warpwolf
for more damage.

Turn 3:

The Warpwolf is out of range for leeching, but makes its frenzy check. The Druids cast a Devouring on the Bastions. I think it was just out of range, but he got a lucky scatter hurting some of them. Baldur creates a forest in front of the Druids, casts Stone Skin, moves into the forest and pops his feat. The Wolves kill Holt (good riddance), the Warpwolf moves into the forest (Aiyana has no melee weapon) and the Gorax kills Aiyana using its Primal animus. The Argus Doppler Barks the right most Bastion. The War Wolf runs from his cover and starts hugging some Zealot legs.

Payback time! I upkeep EoM. The Zealots dance around the Wolves, tripping over some sharp rocks while moving out of their melee range and failing to kill any Wolves. Sevvy does the dirty work himself, finishing of the Wolves with Ashes to Ashes and pops his feat mmwhahahha. Time for some Plastion poooweeerrrrr. Under March from Rhupert, they manage to charge the Warpwolf and Gorax (except for the Doppler Barked Bastion) staying just outside Baldurs feat range, doing massive damage and killing both the ugly headed beasts. Senny makes wolf-kebab of the War Wolf.

Turn 4:

Not much happens. He upkeeps the forest and tactically retreats due to my feat, sits on some fury and casts Stone Skin again.

I upkeep EoM. The Zealots run toward the Druids and the Bastions run into the forest, Impervious Vilmon behind them and Senny making a daring run toward Baldur. Rhupert walks up but is too far behind for the Bastions to hear is war song. Severius casts Ashes to Ashes on the Zealot leader, incinerating him and some nearby Druids and casting Vision with his last focus.

Turn 5:

Do or die moment for Master of Stone. He casts his forest next to Severius and teleports. First attack misses! Second attack does major damage, but Sevvy saw that swing coming and uses Vision :-D Last attack hurts like hell, but Sevvy is much tougher than that, ha! Druids hurt the Bastions some more, but have lost their appetite for battle.

Severius has had enough of this petty bickering and combines arms with Vilmon to sent the Stonecleaver back to his forest!

Wauw, a long and tense battle! I had great fun and am really satisfied with how the Bastions performed. Maybe I need to squeeze a Vassal in this list to protect BoV some more, but I am happy with how this list worked out.

Will test this list again next week, stay tuned!

Bastion powerrr!

Didn't have much time to paint this week, but this morning I assembled my very own Bastions that came in this week!

Here is a recollection of what I think about these first plastic models from the PPS line and the assembly process:

Packaging - every model is packaged in its own plastic bag to keep its components separated from the rest, nice!
Mold lines - arghhh, the mold lines are really in the most horrible places. I had a hard time to remove all of them and to be honest I gave up after a while. I just removed the most obvious ones.
Assembly - assembly was very easy. As you can see on the picture I glued the whole model together except for the arms to make painting easier.
Plastic - the plastic is harder then the GW plastic (which I like better) and a bit more difficult to cut smoothly.

Overall, I'm happy with them, they are very nice models once put together! Now to think of a nice painting scheme that fits the rest of my army.

Visions of War

Yesterday, I had a grand vision of the future, of a Menoth weapon master army, immune to KD, sweeping all opposition from the tables at my gaming club, and spreading the true law among the heathens of Immoren... And *BAM* back was my inspiration!

After the routine weekend cleaning ritual this morning, I pick-up my brush and started working on my long overdue Knights Exemplar. They are the first step to my MK2 weapon master army. My bastions are coming in next week and after that Gravus is going to get a nice paint job.

Made some pictures of my WIP Knights and of the Bouncer I have been working on for my brother.

What's going on?

Well, after finishing my zealots I started assembling Mulg The Ancient for my brother. A lot of time was spent on green stuffing this monster, because of all the gaps and holes. Anywyz, that's done now and man what a big model this is; his club is just HUGE! Going to hand the model over to my brother tonight and wish him a lot of luck painting this one, hahaha!

The last few days I didn't feel like painting any Protectorate models, so I picked up another troll model from my brother to paint, The Bouncer. I really like this model, because of all the armor and the dynamic pose of the chain ball and shield. The paint job is getting along nicely and I should be able to finish it this weekend. Hopefully my bro will be happily surprised when he gets it back! And who knows, maybe I have enough inspiration again to continue with my Fire of Salvation.

I'll post a picture of the Bouncer when it is done.

Finally, they are done. Not so much speed panting as I hoped for, but definitely speedier painting than normal. I saved a lot of time using GW gryphonne sepia wash for most of the cloth. I'm very happy how they turned out and glad I can play with them painted now.

Next project; still have to decide on that, but probably Fire of Salvation.

Few days ago I was browsing a bit through the miniatures on the Reaper Miniatures site and found a very interesting model:

First thing that came to mind was, wouldn't this model make for a great leader of my future Daughters of the Flame unit? Well, I got her in the mail today (because I just could not resist ordering her :D) and she looks terrific! I don't have any Daughters of the flame yet, so I have no clue if her size is about the same as the original models. I ordered a box of Daughters today, so future posts for this unit are to follow!

Busy at the moment trying to tackle these blasted buggers after being undercoated black for way too long (yes, I'm postponing my 6 exemplars even longer *sigh*)... Trying a speed painting scheme on them with help of lots of GW foundation paint and GW washes.

This is the result after 1 hour of painting:

I'm satisfied with the model, because it looks good enough for play and I can finish the rest of them in a reasonable amount of time this way.

Reznik Vs Grissel - It's Wracking Time!

Yesterday my brother and me had a nice 500pts fight between Reznik and Grissel. This is my first game in 2 months so I expected a lot of mistakes on my side.

Deployment:

Grissel, Axer, Impaler, Full Champions, 3 Long Riders, Fell Caller, Full Krielstone unit + UA.

Reznik, Castigator, Crusader, Revenger, Full Choir, Vassal, Rhupert, 7 TFG + UA.

Turn 1 & 2:

Both the Trolls and Menites close on each other with nothing exiting happening just yet.

Turn 3:

The Long Riders charge the TFG (with Iron Zeal, Shield Wall and Dirge of Mists) in the narrow corridor, but fail to do hit or do damage against them. The branded Champions run through the forest and right in front of my 2 heavies (!). The rest follows behind.

The TFG set the Long Riders on fire and do some minor damage. The Castigator and Crusader destroy the whole unit of Champions under Infuse!

Turn 4:

The Long Riders retaliate and destroy half of my TFG. Grissel feats and casts an Uproar on the Crusader doing minor damage and the Crusader walks toward the Impaler under Witchhound. The trolls fail to hit or do anything else after that (bad dice rolls on his side).

The Crusader and Reznik (with Hate Monger; side note, I guess Reznik was unable to cast spells under the feat, arghh) destroy the Long Riders (making a wrack of 1 to block charge lanes to Reznik) and the remaining TFG walk up blocking charge lanes (no orders cause of Grissels feat). The Castigator makes short work of the Impaler.

Turn 5:

The trolls see their chance! The Krielstone unit Stone Warp for Strength and kill some blocking TFG. Grissel sings Heroic Ballad on the Troll Axer (which is impossible outside her feat I see now!) and blows up the Wrack with an Uproar, burning away scribes and TFG in the resulting 5" fireball. The Axer has a free charge lane to Reznik now, but fails to seal the deal... Even the charging Fellcaller is unable to down the High Executioner!

All eyes turn to the Castigator. Reznik casts Zealot's Rage and the Castigator charges through the forest straight for Grissel. After a load of IMMENSLY bad dice rolls, he is unable to kill Grissel, leaving her with 4 hitpoints but on fire!

Turn 6:

Only 3 dice rolls away from winning; the fire doesn't go out, 2 rolls left. I do a total of 22 whooping fire damage! Nice, but now for Grissel's tough roll... and she fails!!

Grissel goes down in a burning heap of flesh :-D

Well, that was exiting! We both made a load of mistakes but nevertheless, my brother and me had a great match.

The Castigator, Master of Fire

And here is Reznik's new MKII buddy, the Castigator! I am totally happy with how he turned out and finally have the feeling my jacks are starting to look imposing if you compare them to the others I did when I first started the hobby.

High Executioner Servath Reznik

I was so totally psyched by the changes PP made to Reznik in MK II, I put away my Knights and started painting up the High Badass Executioner. I must say, I consider this as my best painted model I have in my collection now; really proud of how he turned out!

Can't wait to try him out with the new rules; MKII just totally rocks. Well, back to my Knights Exemplar, since they will have a nice role to fulfill in my Reznik MKII lists.

Here are some pictures of my first 2 models of my new Legion of Everblight army. Like I mentioned before, I am going for a quick painting scheme and technique, because I want my first 500 points list painted up fast!

I primed the models with skull white. After that the skin is basecoated with underbelly blue and washed with devlan mud (from citadel), followed by two light drybrush layers of underbelly blue again, adding some white in the second layer.

The scales are done with three layers of coal black with added white as you go.

Nails and and teeth are based with jack bone, washed with brown ink and highlighted with menoth highlight. For some finishing effect, red ink wash in the rims.

The base is washed with a combination of black and brown ink and drybrushed with menoth highlight.

Add some static grass and done!

So, been some time again. A lot has happened in the meantime like Warmachine Mk II being announced and Hordes Metamorphosis released.

After reading the new Hordes Meta book, I thought it was time for me to dust of my unpainted Legion models lying in the closet and get an Hordes army started! The models I have make for a nice 500 points list:

I want this army painted up fast, so I will rely on the good old and fast drybrushing for the skin and will paint the scales, bones and armour using layering and washes. Already got my Shredder and Forsaken painted up, but still have to make some nice pictures; will post them soon!

Reznik Vs Borka - Clash of the Titans!

Last night I played a game against my brother. This was the first 500 pts game between us and actually his second 500 pts game ever! He's very busy creating a fresh trollblood army and bought some extra models from a friend of ours that stopped playing with the trollblood faction. He's really getting the hang of the game and his fresh blood is a welcome addition to our gaming group *evil grin*.

I took Reznik out of the box again, because I really want figure out how to get his play style work for me; I think it's a difficult caster, but though very rewarding.

I can't exactly remember when and which ability was used on his side, because he had some stuff I never played against like Borka and the Chronicler. I will do my best.

ROUND 1:

Trolls run forward in orderly fashion with the champions leading the front.

I advance almost everything. TFG go in shield wall under the cover of Dirge of Mist and the Choir sings Safe Passage. Revenger runs to the left side. A&H go invisible.

ROUND 2:

He advances everything forward half speed or so and is staying on the defense.

Funny enough, I run my Revenger back to the right in front of his Blitzer. Aiyana casts Harm on the left most champion, but misses. Holt shoots the same champion and hits all 3 shots, thus knocking it down, but with 1 hitpoint left.
Rhupert advances and plays March on TFG (I'm still trying to figure out why I did that at that time). TFG advance in Shield Wall formation and pop Iron Zeal. Choir sings Infuse.
Reznik arc nodes a boosted Brand of Heresy on the Blitzer and hits. After that the Vassal lets the Redeemer make a shot at the Blitzer, but it is just beyond range...
I move the Redeemer up some inches and take 3 shots at the Blitzer... rolling pretty bad and doing minor damage.

Looking back at this turn, I moved Reznik and my jacks in a pretty bad position behind the wall with little room left for a possible counter charge next turn *bonk*.

ROUND 3:

Now shit starts hitting the fan and my brother is getting excited. His champions charge my line (the KD'ed one stands up and advances along) with Open Road from the Fell Caller to get past the wall. My TFG prove too though and he only kills 1. His Chronicler also advances and reads chapter 2 or 3 or something like that (he didn't use the Chronicler to full effect because he was using it for the first time).
The Axer charges my TFG with a Thresher attack and does a better job then the Champions, killing 2 TFG.
The Blitzer shoots and charges my Revenger and does some damage, but gets pushed back. The Axer charges my Revenger too and takes out its shield...

Now for the fun part. Borka see a very thin LOS to my Choir and throws a bloody bomb which luckily misses... but then scatters 1 inch backward to kill all but 1 acolyte! Should have made a picture of my brother's smug look, lol. After that he still has fury to cast Mosh Pit.

Because of my poor positioning I have no clear charge lane with Reznik to Borka. I upkeep Branded on the Blitzer and allocate 1 focus to the Devout, keeping the remaining 4.
Rhupert sings Heroic Call on the TFG *grumble* and the TFG do some CMA attacks setting 3 Champions on fire, but not killing them. A&H move a bit back (why didn't I put them closer to the REAL action?) and manage to kill the 2 left most already damaged Champions.

Without the Choir, my jacks are in a weakened state. My Revenger makes room for the Devout, but forgetting Mosh Pit, I move too close to the Axer. The free strike from Mosh Pit does some minor damage and the Revenger returns the favor, also doing minor damage. The Devout charges the Axer and doesn't do enough damage to kill it.

Reznik gets fired up and casts Hate Monger, getting 2 initial attacks. He charges the Blitzer and after 2 attacks, leaves him standing with 1 hitpoint left. Thinking him out of action, I use my 2 other focus to attack the Axer, putting the ugly beast down. I pop Judgment Day and think myself safe from Borka, without fury.

ROUND 4:

The round my brother beat me... He starts with cutting himself for 5 fury (DOHHHH, what was I smoking??). The Fell Caller supports Borka with War Cry. Borka charges forward, getting a Defensive Strike from the Devout in the process and negating the War Cry with the -2 MAT penalty. Borka goes all out and just manages to kill Reznik with his last fury point.

I congratulate him with his well earned victory!

The errors on my side are pretty obvious: bad positioning and forgetting critical rules like cutting for fury are the biggest ones I guess. I learned a lot from this game!

Last week I played a 500 pts game against a friend of mine to test my new Feora list with some stuff from Legends added.

Please forgive me using 4 KE proxies to fill up my Idrian unit and playing with a half painted army... I feel ashamed (and I should be!!). This will be corrected in the very near future :-)

ROUND 1:

Zealots run forward to Sentry Stone on the left. Idrians get Intercept order and move toward their Prey (Sentry Stone on the right). Avatar generates 3 focus, runs foward and activates his Gaze. Choir run forward. Vassal advances and gives the Avatar Enliven. Feora casts EoD, moves up and casts Ignite on the Idrians.

His left Sentry Stone generates a Mannikin, moves it toward my zealots and does nothing (?). The same for the right Senry Stone, but he forfeits his movement for an aiming bonus. Of course, I can't let that happen so I charge/run my Idrians to the left, kill his Sentry Stone (he leached a focus point from my Avatar, so it's visible) and Mannikin with some attacks and make the Warpwolf my new Prey.

Warpwolf warps for armor and runs to Shifting Stones on the left which teleport him in front of my zealots. Pureblood moves to Shifting Stones and Warp Strikes 1 of my Idrians and the rest make their cmd check. Shifting Stones teleport him in the middle of my Idrians. Gorax and Argus run toward my Idrians. Kaya follows behind.

ROUND 2:

Time for slaughtering. Avatar generates 3 focus and don't upkeep Ignite on the Idrians. The Idrians get the Intercept order and charge the Gorax and Pureblood doing moderate damage with combined attacks. The Choir pray for Infuse and the Vassal gives the Avatar Enliven. Avatar charges the Pureblood and makes short work of it (my friend says something about not having enough focus to transfer the damage and making a mistake). The Zealots move closer to the Warpwolf ( 1 dies from a free strike), Pray for Fevor and leave the Warpwolf standing with 7 live left. I bomb scatters on the Mannikin. The Monolith bearer calls for a Greater Destiny.
Feora actives EoD, charges the Warpwolf making short work of it, activates her feat and camps 4 focus.

Hmm, Kaya is standing between the Shifting Stones.... bugger... To make a long story short, the stones teleport her in front of Feora. Kaya misses her attacks on Feora, use her feat, Spirit Doors the Gorax to Feora and heals some damage on him. The Gorax needs all his fury for his attacks on Feora and smashes her with his last attack!

I have to say, for a game of only 2 rounds it was very tense and close! I was really wondering how my new list was going to work out, but it did pretty good in my eyes. Too bad I overlooked Kaya standing in the stones; that won my friend the game.

Legends changed it all... My gaming group is totally back in Warmachine and Hordes again, and even my brother started a troll army which he enjoys very much!

So, after a short sidestep from Privateerpress, we are back stronger then ever.

I'm experimenting a bit with Reznik and Feora atm for upcoming tourneys and will starting posting battlereports to track my progress.

Been a while...

Wauw, long time ago already. A lot has happened in the mean time; my gaming group has a PPS burnout atm and we don't play WM/Hordes that frequently anymore. Infinity has also been put into the fridge. Some guys picked up 5e 40k ruleset and rest of us are busy with AT-43 which is my favorite atm. I even bought a small army therians and am winning more souls among my group to play AT-43 against!

But then... I came across the new GW US website and instantly fell in love with the "new" plastic customizable Chaos Terminator Lord and I just HAD to buy it... which I of course did.

Menoth versus Legion - 500pts

Last night I had a 500pts practice battle against a friend, to warm-up for the tournament. We took a SR3 map and the assassination scenario.

His list:

Setup:

I won the roll and setup first. From left to right: vilmon, zealots with rhupert behind them, crusader, tfg with kreoss and choir behind them, revenger. After his setup I deployed the wrack in the middle close to right table edge.
He bunches up in 1 big ball of legion nastiness with the Seraph hanging to the right.

Round 1:

Everything but Vilmon advances (he goes impervious and runs toward a wall in the middle with the zealots behind him), tfg go shield wall, kreoss casts PoM on the zealots and retribution on the revenger, choir sings no shootie.
He runs everything forward with the seraph trying to flank my right side ans puts some fury on the forsaken

Round 2:

Zealots advance and go GD (still out of range), vilmon hangs with them, crusader moves up too. Rhupert sings dirge of mist on the Tfg which go shield wall, advance, and use iron zeal. Revenger moves closer to the seraph. Kreoss moves up and casts PoM on the TFG (these guys are loaded with DEF and ARM about now) and takes a fully boosted immolation shot through the revenger on the seraph, taking out its MIND and some more. Choir hangs a bit to the back and sings no shootie.
So, he has 2 choices now; run back and let all my effects work out or charge my brick of Menoth... He opts for the last one and prepares for glory! 2 shredders goes rabid and charge my tfg, nothing. The other runs toward my Revenger (not in contact). Rhyas and swordsmen run to my right flank, setting up for assassination. CRex runs in contact with my Revenger. Forsaken runs toward my crusader. Teraph moves forward through the middle meeting my zealots. Seraph takes a shot at my choir and kills leader and 3 of them.

Round 3:

Ok, show time. Choir flees *cry*. Revenger walks a bit forward (still in melee with CRex). Kreoss pops feat and sucks focus from wrack, which explodes, killing some swordsmen, damaging the CRex and my Revenger. Everything legion is KD atm. Kreoss arcs 4 immolations at Rhyas and he can transfer 2, but still 8 hp away from dying! Damn... Rhupert sings March on my TFG. TFG move up to Rhyas and swordsmen (no charge lane to rhyas). 2 TFG can reach Rhyas and 4 attacks later, the biatch has 1 hp left! Not my day... but she is on fire :-) The rest of the TFG kills the swordsmen and the lone shredder. Zealots kill the teraph. Vilmon moves back and kills a shredder and the forsaken. Crusader kills the other shredder.
His turn *gulp*. Fire goes out on Rhyas (omg). Full on fury, he feats and charges my Revenger, which is still standing after. He moves behind Revenger and within range of Kreoss. 3 attacks later, a big red spot marks the place where kreoss was standing..

Well, almost, is just not enough. Was a fun and fast battle and good practice for me for the upcoming tourney this Saturday!

Well, it has been some time since my last post on the blog... but good news for me, my local gaming group and anyone following this blog; I'm back! My World of Warcraft account has been cancelled and I already completed painting my Crusader and core unit of Temple Flameguard (will upload pictures soon!).

Next saturday is also my first Warmachine/Hordes tournament ever, yaahhhh! It will be Steamroller 3 format, 500pts limit and 3 rounds. Here is the list I'm taking:

Yesterday I started working on my Crusader. I want to continue with the extreme highlighting of black on the warjacks, because I think it looks kewl and imposing from a distance and on the battlefield. I did my Revenger in the same style (will post pictures soon).
